welcome to studio 165
I never imagined living away from Colorado where I lived most of my life, and moving here to the middle of continental U.S. That's where I make my art. I have a partial formal training in fine art and commercial art from Western State College, Gunnison, Colo., and Metropolitan State College in DenvI er as well as many years of producing and selling my art and continually taking workshops and classes with artist's whose works I admire. After teaching school at the elementary level for 21 years in Colorado, I retired from teaching - which has given me the opportunity to teach children, as well as adults, in the medium of pastel. I love that I now devote my whole life to my art.
From a very young age, my parents made sure I had lots of supplies and materials to make art of all kinds. I have always been involved in art in one form or another. From bakery display placards and sign painting - to silkscreening jerseys for a motocross team - to designing stained glass and restaurant menus - to painting commissioned pieces in animal and people portraits, I feel I have lots of experience in a variety of artistic venues. However, my best training is to paint or draw everyday in my studio located on the farmstead where I live because I realize to be better there needs to be a constant and regular amount of devoted time to imagining and creating.
I glean my inspiration from everyday living situations and objects; the world that I see and people I know. Animals are often my subject of choice, as I find them extremely interesting and often study their habits and behaviors. Beyond animals, I choose the genre of narrative portraiture. I have studied with many portrait artists over the years of making art. Some contemporary favorites are Katelyn Alain, Karin Jurick and Susan Carlin. I have an eclectic interest in many different styles and art periods, surrealism and impressionism to name a few. I am fascinated by light on color, how it changes and gives effect to one's view. My goal is to provide my audience with the same experience. I work in many mediums but find that oil paint and pastel are my favorites. The method of applying them to a variety of surfaces is really the same. To be able to paint everyday? Life doesn't get any better than this! You can read more about me on my web log at http://jpwall.blogspot.com . I am currently a member of the Mid- America Pastel Society in Kansas City, and the Kansas Academy of Oil Painters.
